Targeting each key city in my geographic area

Duplicate Content Question: I am working on a website with one type of local service. The owner wanted a handful of pages targeting each key city in his geographic area. These city pages use the same model as the home page, but do have the content reworded as well as unique pictures and some city specific information. After running the website through Siteliner, the owner decided that the content scored too high. But for a website like this, what is an acceptable score? The website reminds me almost like a franchise model with each location being very similar to the others for branding purposes.

  • Kolleen Shallcross: If it’s all on the same website and it’s targeting the specific cities, it’s fine for dupe content. Google is smart enough to know there’s only a few ways to describe a local biz (like roofing, divorce lawyer, plumbing, dentist)
  • Kolleen Shallcross: Make sure the name of the city is in the url.
  • Stephanie Solheim: Kolleen Shallcross Yeah that is what we did...the niche is super targeted - think vent cleaning. Theres not very many ways to say it LOL
  • Kolleen Shallcross: Stephanie Solheim Exactly. I have a good article on this, I may have sent it to you, it describes SEOing for a roofer.
  • Caroline Golden: Kolleen Shallcross I`d be interested to read that, if at all possible? 🙏

  • Caroline Golden: Kolleen Shallcross thank you!
  • Michael Stricker: This tactic may not earn Search visibility unless the content useful, unique... but it is unlikely to damage rank. No harm, no help. Better to invest the time in pumping up the GMB Pages.
  • Ammon Johns: The answer to this one has not really changed over the past 8 years or so. Firstly, the idea of ANY kind of Duplicate Content Penalty is an absolute myth. There has never been one, and there is zero reason from a search perspective to have one.

Secondly, despite there being no penalty, there are inherent costs and issue related to duplicate content, but mostly around the issue of having the less effective (converting) page outrank the other, the waste of dev time, etc.

Advice on how to deal with thin content (mostly duplication) on locational pages was given in an earlier detailed discussion: https://www.bruceclay.com/.../website-can-thin-content.../
