A patent granted to Google this week describes how the search engine attempts to extract structured data from pages to be able to provide query results that list episodes for TV shows, or lists of songs by particular musicians.

I`ve been wondering where Google was taking this infomation from, and it`s not a manual process, nor is it taken from a source such as Freebase. Instead, Google looks for pages specifically about certain entities, and sees if this kind of information might be layed out in a way that can be easily extracted from pages using appropriate patterns for those sources.
