  • Michael Martinez: You know, when I was in college we played pool all the time. We`d stand on the balcony and look down on the student center to kill the time. Sometimes some pretty cute girls would come play on the pool tables near me and we`d try to talk to them. I`d say we had a lot of fun on that balcony, talking to people and chatting up the girls. One day a girl came by looking for something to do. I saw a couple of cues and a rack of balls on one of the pool tables near me so I invited her to play a game. We passed the afternoon and got to know each other a little better.

    You`re welcome.
  • JL Faverio: lol nice thanks Michael
  • Shahab Rabbani Malik: Michael Martinez awesome man.
  • Michael Martinez: Kenneth Dieryck I didn`t ask but assumed the query was just illustrative. For this particular query it might result in some long tail traffic.

Generally I think people misunderstand how "near me" queries work (and that includes me). My rule of thumb is that if I see a local pack in the results then I assume the query triggered a local search algorithm. If I don`t see the local pack then I assume the query may be treated like a normal keyword search.

But even if that is an accurate interpretation of what the algorithms are doing there is nothing to prevent them from resolving "near me" queries in different ways for different people.
  • Travis Bailey: I can see why simply stating `near me` doesn`t work well in NYC. But for less populated geo-targets, go for it. It`s usually an easy-ish win. Sometimes it only requires as little as the title tag, if the target area is a little sparse on competition.

"It`s a great pool hall near me. The tables are in great condition, and the cues aren`t warped." - Bob Testimonially

    It doesn`t necessarily have to be `pool table near me` X 10.

I`ve not done any real research on this niche, and the geo could scatter keyword targets to the wind, but I imagine a more frequent/serious customer looks for pool halls & pool leagues. Whilst some are just looking for for a place with a table or two.
  • Brent Moore: Near me goes off their location. Not having the keyword placement.
  • Michael Martinez: "Near me goes off their location. Not having the keyword placement."

True - though only for some queries. But one should always practice natural writing, in my opinion.
  • Nimie Gill: Michael Martinez how is it natural to say "we are the pool table near me"?
  • Michael Martinez: Nimie Gill See my reply to JL Faverio. But he did not ask about a phrase like "we are the pool table near me". I`m sure I could come up with something in a Kafkaesque anecdote but I hate Kafka like a cockroach.
  • Suresh K: That you can use as anchor text while creating backlink. I too have a similar problem - "staffing companies near me"..
  • Bradley Bennett: I’m confused. You guys are writing content and creating backlinks for “... near me”?
  • Jayasanker Jayakrishnan: Pool table in "X location" in H2 and even in H1.an anchor text with "near me" is unnatural to say the least.
  • Cody Sharp: Here`s how I H1 title that stuff - Are You Looking for a `Dentist Near Me`?
Then I`ll use the keyword phrase one more time or so within a paragraph of standard stuff about their office and as one of the alt tags for an image and of course follow all the other best practices.

According to GSC, it`s one of the most clicked on phrases for a few folks I created that content for. For some markets, I`m sure it doesn`t work and it likely won`t work forever so your mileage/utility may vary.
  • Dave Elliott: You aren`t trying to optimise for "near me" though! "Near me" is just the intent trigger. You need to optimise for "Pool Tables (town/area)".
  • JL Faverio: Dave Elliott good point; best pool tables in New York etc.
