Making sure that the site can get the best ranking possible

Hi I`m new to this whole SEO thing and I was googling which are the best practices to have. One thing that came up is having an agile SEO process. This will allow to audit, fix and then monitor a site every day making sure that the site can get the best ranking possible. I`m thinking about creating my own version of this but would need to know if there`s potential before I fully commit. Is this a good starting base?

Michael Martinez: If you`re working on an old site that has a lot of content and hasn`t been updated in a couple of years that sounds like a plan.

Otherwise it sounds like a lot of wheel-spinning to me.
