Keyword Planner is not giving accurate data

Ok peeps: Google`s Keyword Planner is not giving accurate data even when we place the phrase in the review plan option. (as per explained in this blog post that my friend Mel shared with me a while ago http://searchengineland.com/get-old-google-keyword-planner-… )
The numbers are much larger because they are lumping the similar keyword phrases together. This is not just happening for large volume phrases but also for long tail, low volume phrases.
I checked on several keyword phrases that I did keyword research for earlier this year and the difference is humongous.
For example: going from 100 searches per month to 530 searches per month for the same keyword phrase. Others only go from 70 searches per month to 150 searches per month. The difference varies from keyword phrase to keyword phrase and it`s pretty hard to figure out if the real volume is half of it, one third or a fifth of what they are informing us, or even less.
What option do we have now to get more accurate data for long tail keyword phrases since Google is the search giant that has the complete data. Can we rely on tools that grab their information from other search engines?
Most of the tools out there are grabbing their data from Google`s keyword tool anyways so going to them is trading potatoes for potatoes. I have a huge list of keyword tools, the thing is: what is their data based on? And so this leaves us all with the question of what to do next? Thank you in advance for any help!

  • Eren Mckay: Thanks so much for your insight Alan Bleiweiss I appreciate it
  • Bill Slawski: I mostly do client audits rather than keyword research for most clients, like Alan. We also do use the Moz keyword explorer tool for some keywords as well.
  • Alan Bleiweiss: I don`t fixate on granular keyword variances. In my audit work, it`s a shiny object distraction. So for what I do, general range ballpark comparisons are enough to work with. In fact, I got away from granular before they even came out with "not provided" in G.A. I do use Moz keyword explorer more these days though, as it gives more variant data, even for the high level keyword needs I have in my audits. So that may be helpful for your situation.
