Content and links within JS tags

I have a question about content and links within JS tags. I recently managed to get a brand mention for a client of mine within an article on Forbes.com. Later on an SEO consultant told my client that the link from this article did not carry much weight due to a `script` on the page, the only thing I can think of that he/she could be referring to is JS.

The page itself is indexed just fine in Google as well as Google news and the link is followed so I dont really see what the problem is. On closer inspection of the page source I saw that the main block of text for the article is enclosed with //
Im afraid I cant show the page in question due to NDA reasons but I have noticed that ALL Forbes articles and pages are setup like this one for example:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2016/10/26/apple-ios-10-1-apple-health-lost-data-problem

any feedback would be greatly appreciated! //

The page itself is indexed just fine in Google as well as Google news and the link is followed so I dont really see what the problem is. On closer inspection of the page source I saw that the main block of text for the article is enclosed with <script> tags but everything else within that including the links is normal html, are those script tags changing how Google sees the content there? Are the links there passing page-rank & equity as normal?

  • Suraj Gadage: +David Jones Historically, SEO recommendations have been around having plain text content whenever possible instead of dynamically generated content or adding JavaScript links. Clearly, that is no longer the case for Google. Javascript links work in a similar manner to plain HTML links and Google can understand this pretty well. I'm sure that the link from forbes.com would still pass the link juice like a normal link would do.

    Hope this helps!
  • Neeraj Pandey: +David Jones Google does crawl and understand JavaScript until it has the content without click or external source. If your link in HTML code is available no need to worry for it...
  • Tony “Tiggerito” McCreath: Searching for a phrase found only in the JS code returns the page. So Google is able to get to the content.
