JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content

A friend just asked me this: "I cant figure out how to fix this on google page test. Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content. If you could point me to somewhere to learn how to fix this would be cool."

  • Webado C Webada: Painstakingly by putting all the code on page a bit at a time. Might end up with all of it on the page which sucks big time.
  • Neil Cheesman: Join the club.... I did manage to get some good results with"Above The Fold Optimization" plugin - but had some styling issues... still trying... and haven`t had success with any others... Wordpress that is...
  • Kyle Hawk: The JS is easy, just make sure any scripts are located at the bottom of the page before the tag. CSS is a little bit more difficult, I always ignore it. I guess you could inline it where possible, but that has its own problems with maintenance.
  • Webado C Webada: Not off the top of my head.
  • Webado C Webada: Some JS needs to be in the head section.
  • Kyle Hawk: Then there is no way around keeping it from render blocking. You could async it, but then if anything is reliant on that you will run into problems. Just out of curiosity, could you name an instance when JS has to be in the head? Meaning it wouldn`t work if at the end of the body.
  • Webado C Webada: Wordpress and maybe Ajax or lots of js - plus ssl = slow
  • Loren Noble: My website he is talking about it noblecoalition.com and for some reason my speed test are not good and I cant figure out why
  • Neil Cheesman: https://gtmetrix.com/reports/noblecoalition.com/QyyeVb9W
  • Kyle Hawk: Also, you need to work on your image compression. The three images in the slider total over 3MB! That needs to come down.
  • Neil Cheesman: My initial thought on the website is images need optimizing...
  • Webado C Webada: Probably images too, didn`t check but nothing was loading for a long time, spinning circle round and round.
  • Webado C Webada: I hate Wordpress and reliance on plugins.
  • Neil Cheesman: The `problem` with some images - is that YOU may think they look cool.. but you need to do some serious audit as to what is actually necessary... if website visitors don`t reach the page it doesn`t matter what images you have on there...
  • Loren Noble: wp smush of another plug in?
  • Webado C Webada: You don`t need a plugin for that. Just size images properly and optimize them before uploading them.
  • Kyle Hawk: Neil Cheesman great point. Plus, you`d be amazed at how much you can compress / size down an image and not lose that much quality. This slider would be a perfect use for something like srcset
  • Neil Cheesman: http://optimizilla.com/ is quite good as an upload and it`s free.. and shortpixel (I think that name is correct)
  • Loren Noble: Im going to optimizilla and see if It helps
  • Neil Cheesman: Also - maybe PLUGIN ORGANIZER as some plugins may not be needed on homepage and also plugin P3 which shows how much each plugin uses to load...
  • Neil Cheesman: I use Optimizalla every day.... and you can adjust the amount of compression...
  • Neil Cheesman: Personally I would get rid of the slider....
  • Webado C Webada: Better to optimize images before uploading them, save bandwidth.
  • Kyle Hawk: Plus one for optimizilla here as well. Great tool.
  • Webado C Webada: tinypng.com is also good for both png and jpg. I use jpeg optimizer for jpegs though.
