Is it important to have specific schema markups?

Is it important to have specific schema markups?

For instance, about markup, contact markup, etc.

My client has organization markup on most pages. I know that they shouldn`t have it on contact, so I`ll change that but what about the rest?

  • Tim van Iersel: It should give info about what’s on the page.

I don’t know if the search engines use the specific webpage types but it’s better to specify for when they start using it.

A list of all types mentioned by Schema.org:

    - AboutPage
    - CheckoutPage
    - CollectionPage
    - ContactPage
    - FAQPage
    - ItemPage
    - MedicalWebPage
    - ProfilePage
    - QAPage
    - SearchResultsPage

Most of my clients have WordPress with Yoast installed for that use case I’ve developed the remove schema plugin. It can remove generated schema by Yoast and or WooCommerce etc. per page/post.

And then for placing my own schema the Websitescanner custom schema plugin.
  • Mark X Quadros: Thanks for the solid info mate.

My client is using Yoast as well, so I suspect the "organization schema" is auto-generated by it.
  • Michael Martinez: The rule of thumb is that if one is going to use Schema then it should only be used correctly, per the specification. The search engines actively experiment with using Schema markup for analysis. That may result in their introducing some new signals in future algorithms (Schema comes directly from search engines like Bing and Google). That said, they need a large, consistently behaving corpus to identify and derive such signals - as well as to determine what value (if any) they may bring to the search ecosystem. So while there is no guarantee that using Schema will help in any part of the system (selection, ranking, or display) it almost certainly WON`T benefit anyone if it`s not done properly. It`s an "in for a penny, in for a pound" proposition in my opinion. Don`t do it halfway.
