I wonder if there is a conflict somewhere

I wonder if there is a `conflict` somewhere... for a particular website in Google - it works fine in Bing - I enter the website domain name https://www.etc and get in Google "Did you mean https://etc" #notethedifference setting in Google Search Console is "www." Canonical is https://www

  • Jim Munro: What is the actual url, Neil?
  • Neil Cheesman: this is a `niggle` as much as anything - but I wonder IF it might point to some other underlying problem - or possibly just an indexing issue... ie.. take time..
  • Jim Munro: I don`t know it will help or not but you are redirecting twice when you shouldn`t need to. I`m no expert but see if this works when added to the top of your htaccess rules RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} 80 RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://www.finepetportraits.co.uk/$1 R, L
  • Alan Bleiweiss: Yeah I just did my own test, before seeing Jim`s comment - you have a multi-hop redirect chain issue going on that isn`t helping anything.
  • Alan Bleiweiss: And Google has not flushed out all the non-live variations from their system at this point.
  • Alan Bleiweiss: There could be (probably are) other causes for the "did you mean", however if there are, it`s beyond me what the cause might be - other than inbound links maybe?
  • Jody Nesbitt: have you changed from or to the non www version recently, https://finepetportraits.co.uk, it seems google has this as the preferred one, if we look at the waterfall, its def redirecting, https://gtmetrix.com/reports/finepetportraits.co.uk/G4LKk5kR, the server response is awesome, so its not costing you any time, but where it could hurt you is duplicate content as google is possibly seeing 2 domains at the moment
  • Neil Cheesman: many thanks - I need to double check the htaccess today... asked siteground to look late last night and they said all was okay... thanks again #sometimescantseethewoodforthetrees
  • Neil Cheesman: Last last night when I posted the question I did initially put about the htaccess but I couldn`t see the problem... asked siteground to look at it.. and the reply was it was all okay... went back again today and second person saw the problem and fixed it in a moment...
  • Jim Munro: googlebot can crawl your pages twice as often now. :)
  • Jim Munro: http://finepetportraits.co.uk/ 301: Permanent redirect to https://finepetportraits.co.uk/ https://finepetportraits.co.uk/ 301: Permanent redirect to https://www.finepetportraits.co.uk/ https://www.finepetportraits.co.uk/ 200: HTTP/1.1 200
  • Neil Cheesman: RESOLVED! It was indeed a problem in the htaccess file Thanks all!
