I am not able to generate sitemap.xml

I am not able to generate sitemap.xml for my site what could be the possible reason? Do I need to add a separate code?
PS. I tried adding my site to xml sitemap generator tool.

Edwin Jonk: Since it is a large site. I would use sitemap index. That why you can separate the different sections of the site and generate sitemaps for that particular section. Besides the limit of 25.000 inputs, it also helps you to manage the sitemaps and the different sections better.
