Dumb SEO Questions

How "thin" is too thin?

How "thin" is too thin? We`re building a mini-site that collects together all of our favourite "funny adverts" from around the world. Partly to use as a mood-board for new clients (as we script exactly that), and partly also as an SEO project, to reel in a few new clients who were originally searching the web for inspiration. The current version is here: https://whitelabelcomedy.com/funny-ads-funniest-facebook-youtube-commercials-tv-advertsWe`re going to be putting together long-form posts that talk about different categories (funny 80s Ads, funny Tech Ads etc) - but the posts that form the bulk of the archive really are just an embedded YouTube video and 100-200 words of copy. Will this get flagged as "thin content" and end up getting us penalised? Or, seeing as we don`t intend to get any individual "advert" to rank but just the collections of them - will we be ok?I don`t want to artificially inflate each listing - they are what they are, and if we add too much fluff they`ll stop being fit for purpose - but I also don`t want to waste all this effort only to get ignored by google because it doesn`t like the way we`ve done things.Would LOVE to know your thoughts. Thanks all!

  • Adam Hunt: (Posted in another group earlier today - but no one answered! So I figured I`d bring it here and see if any of you guys can help!)
  • Michael Martinez: I`ve occasionally browsed TV advertising archives. Sometimes they are easy to find in Google. Sometimes it`s like pulling teeth from a hen.

Google seems to understand that there isn`t much information about TV commercials - on good days. On other days the search results act like no one at Google has ever watched a TV ad and they have no clue what you`re searching for.

Does that mean Google is treating these kinds of archives as "thin content"?

    I doubt it.

The classic Googlish definition for "thin content" is more-or-less "it serves no purpose except to be relevant to a targeted query" with as little effort and content as possible.

So, I doubt you`ll have a thin content problem but that doesn`t mean your stuff will be easy to find. There are days when I want to throw Google out the window and start over with a card catalog.
  • Adam Hunt: Haha thanks Michael - reassuring to know. I guess that means that, in theory, seeing as it`s our "collection" pages we`ll be aiming to rank for (Funniest 80s Ads etc) we might be ok! I don`t think I`ve yet got the kind of expertise I`d need to get the entire archive to rank, entry by entry - but I`m working on it :)
