Social links are good for the social buzz.

As an SEO I`ve had the notion that social links have no SEO value (i.e. PageRank) ingrained into my head. Social links are good for the social buzz and may generate some real links if you`re lucky.

That is forgetting that social pages do show up in search results so are a ranking ability in their own right. And the public part of a social network can contribute to helping a social page rank.
