Single-page websites are inherently not SEO friendly?

Dumb question for this fine Saturday. One of our clients chose to use just a single-page landing page (built in Unbounce) as its primary online presence, mostly because they didn`t want to pay the full cost for a more robust website. I understand that single-page landing pages are inherently not SEO friendly and that`s OK. But during a recent update from our dev team a couple weeks ago, the noindex tag was accidentally added to the live site. Because of that, it has been de-indexed for a couple weeks (what a nightmare). We removed the noindex tag and I`ve requested indexing on Google and Bing via search console and webmaster tools. Does anyone have any idea how long it could take for the site to get re-indexed again? Any other tips for speeding up the process? (I can`t add a sitemap, unfortunately, nor do I think that`d help because it`s only one page) Thanks in advance!

  • Michael Martinez: Given that it`s only 1 page I would normally expect it to come back within a day or two. But ...

2 weeks is a long time for a site to be deindexed and things change. I had to watch two sites struggle to regain lost rankings after being deindexed for more than 10 days. Neither has fully recovered in 2 years, although we`ve done precious little to help them in the past year.

So that`s an anecdote to keep in mind. It`s not an indication of anything other than personal experience. Other people may have examples of sites that were out for long periods and quickly brought back.
  • Cody Sharp: Totally agree with Michael. Most likely just a day or two but the exceptions are the ones I remember best and they are painful. No way to get reindexed faster I`m afraid.
  • Greg Jensen: Michael Martinez thanks for the response. Fortunately, the only keywords we`re hoping to show up for are directly related to the brand name and not especially competitive. I`m more or less just unsure how long it`ll take before google/Bing actually choose to index it at all 😑
  • Ammon Johns: The engines are just a little slower than usual at the moment given that they have algorithms designed to pick up news and trends and index those quickly, and given that right now there are strongly trending topics that generate a LOT of new stories and pages, latest headlines, etc.

Overall though, how fast any page is crawled and indexed is a function of how `important` the search engine algorithms determine that content to likely be. This is known as `Crawl Priority` if you want to look up more detailed analysis and guides than I can provide here (I`d especially recommend reading some of the slideshare presentations by Dawn Anderson on the topic).

The short version is that having just one page helps (the only way an engine can be content that it has some of the site indexed is to have a page, which is all of the site), but that the main factors are how many and significant the citations for the site are (links), and how much demand there is for what content the engine expects to find there (search volume of keywords used in and around links to the page).
