Redirect planning for a domain migratio

Hi, I am doing redirect planning for a domain migration and was wondering for the redirects to give to the developers do I give them http and https versions and redirect then to new url. For example would I give them http://www.domain.com and https://www.domain.com and both redirect to https://domain2.com. The website is already https but use to be http. Thank you :)

  • Dave Elliott: How many back links have you got pointing to the http version? If old http have pages have back links then do those ones manually. Anything without back links I would handle with a bulk http to https to new domain redirect.
  • Kelly-Anne Crean: Thank you for your quick reply. There are a few backlinks going to http version but not many. Ok how would you inform the developer to do the bulk http to https new domain redirect?
  • Richard Hearne: The only thing you should avoid is redirecting http://oldsite.tld > https://oldsite.tld > https://newsite.tld. Just make sure everything redirects with 1 hop and no chained redirects. Easy for Devs once you explain what you need. But I would ensure that oldsite.tld redirects regardless of the protocol it`s requested on.
  • Kelly-Anne Crean: Ok thank you for your advice :)
