Mobile website in tablet

Hi community,
I have desktop and m.website for mobile users. Desktop isn`t responsive so by now my client served mobile website in tablet saying he tested 2 yrs back and got good conversion.
I know that search engine guideline is to serve desktop in tablet.
In case they serve mobile site what are the drawbacks in this?
