Large spike in the crawl stats section in GSC

I noticed a large spike in the crawl stats section in GSC recently. My question to the community is if this could be due the fact that I have seen 404`s grow in December and January for my site? I checked the index section in GSC and I am not seeing an increase in indexed pages, so I am wondering if a lot of 404`s on the site could spike the crawl rate. For context, we average about 13k in crawled pages and it shot up to 46k.
Thanks!

  • Tim Capper: It could be, but not sure.
However Google does say that they determine crawl rate based upon what they believe the site can handle without putting pressure on it.

If there was a spike in 404 pages, it stands to reason that it wont put pressure on the site and uped the crawl rate.
