How do I turn off the old one without impacting SEO?

Hi, here`s a dumb SEO question:I moved my site to a new domain (exact copy) ... how do I turn off the old one without impacting SEO?
How do I tell Google it has moved?
How to I redirect all traffic to the new site and close the old?
Please be gentle - I`m not a geeky person

  • Martin Arzuaga: The better would be you read the migration guide of Google https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/6033080....

In most of the cases the solution is redirect each old URL to the new one and submit the change of Address in Search console (the last step in the guide).

But because depends of your specific situation, the best suggestion is read that guide minutely
  • Amanda Lewensky: Perfect, thanks Martin Arzuaga (Y)
  • Martin Arzuaga: Anytime 👍
  • Bill Hartzer: Redirect the old old domain to the new domain with a 301 redirect. Then use the google change of address tool.

You’ll need to keep the redirects in place for at least a year. I typically just leave it forever.
  • Trey Collier: There was a back and forth thread about how long a 301 should be in place between myself and Google`s Gary in 2016. He basically said after 6 months you could remove the 301s. I tested that and saw ranking drops. Put back the 301 and rankings returned. Others said later to NOT follow that advice from Gary.

In Jan 2019 it was recommended by John Mueller for at least a year.

To be safe, I think it should be maintained permanently. At least until big G gets their act together.

I`d also try to get all the inbound links to the old URL changed to the new URL. Change the ones you can, then ask "pretty please" for websites to change the ones that you cannot.
