Will https wipe out all of the data I have available under http?

I just discovered my domain property is set up as http not https in google search console. Does anyone have experience setting up a new property as https? If I do this will I wipe out all of the data I have available under http? Thanks!

  • Brenda Malone: Just keep the existing domain and Add the new one. Go to search property, and at the bottom, click ADD a property. Enter the https version there and validate via the method of your choice. Usually the validation is automatic. You will not lose the data, but you will start accruing new data on the https domain.

  • Melinda Paulsell: Excellent! I wanted to confirm before I went forward. Since I was using the http, do you think I was missing some data?

  • Brenda Malone: Melinda Paulsell Some yes, but little can be done.

  • Melinda Paulsell: Much appreciated!

  • Perry Bernard: If you have data in your http property in GSC but your site is https it means your website is not correctly configured to redirect from http to https. It’s good to have all 4 variations of your property in GSC because it reveals “leakage” like this that should be fixed.

  • Melinda Paulsell: Perry Bernard Is there an easy way for me to see if there is an issue with the redirects? They should be correct as I hired someone with an excellent reputation to set up all of the redirects when I migrated my site to Wordpress.

  • Perry Bernard: Melinda Paulsell checking a redirect is super simple. Load any page in your site, then in the browser address bar edit out the ‘s’ in https and hit enter. If the redirect works, it will add the s back in and load the page.

  • Melinda Paulsell: Perry Bernard oh that is definitely simple! Thank you so much for the tip!

  • Perry Bernard: Melinda Paulsell do the same for “www”. Add or remove your “www” and hit enter to load the page. If it consistently bounces to one version, then that redirect works too. In other words, you should only have one live version of your web address. Consistently with https and consistently either with or without www, not both. Adding all 4 of these versions into GSC helps you track down these issues and SEO leakage
