  • Dave Elliott: if you don't redirect you will always get a 404 error. About the only thing you could do is send a 410 error instead. This tells google that the page is permanently gone and to de-index it.
  • Vinoth Senthil: Thats i am asking how..? if i write the robots.txt file means google wont index my pages.. Is it good thing
  • Dave Elliott: I belive that a robots.txt directive will still cause a 404 error in webmaster tools. Either get the page to send a 410 message or just wait untill google realises that the page is gone and stops looking for it. Why do you not want to redirect?
  • Vinoth Senthil: I have 1000 pages and i dont have the related content in my website so only i want to remove those file. If i write robots.txt means google bot wont crawl then how 404 error shows in webmasters
  • Dave Elliott: Robots.txt files quite often do not stop the url from being crawled. just the content. Therefore the pages are likely to show up in the serps still and will almost certainly result in a 404 error according to search console, especially if the page is linked to from other sites.

    Serving up a 410 (page has been deleted) header is probably your best bet. Yoast premium has this functionality or you can add some code into your htaccess file.

    Other options are to create a blank page and add a noindex tag to the page. To divert to the home page or to just wait until google works it out.
  • Vinoth Senthil: thanks +Dave Elliott ;
