How did SEOmoz transformed to MOZ?

Hello everyone. SEOmoz have transformed into MOZ. That`s been a huge move. The question is: What sort of measures should be taken if a company decides to go for this type of transformation? What about the links to the old domain and a massive number of old urls? Thanks for the answers.

  • Justin Y: Permanent redirects and rebranding of the name.
  • Sławomir Zdunek: Justin Y I`m wondering if permanent redirects can be done with a simple line of code or it should be done per page and then it means in case of SEOmoz thousands of code lines.
  • Justin Y: Probably thousands of lines of redirects.
    I`m not sure if theres a more simplified way if doing it if you want to pass the juice to all existing pages. Either way I bet it took them a long time to convert everything over. Excuse my typos. :)
  • Alistair Lattimore: You can implement site-wide page level redirects in a couple of lines of configuration 1 using the .htaccess file and mod_rewrite if you`re using Linux/Apache and similar amounts of configuration in most other hosting environments as well.

  • Justin Y: Alistair Lattimore I assume that`s what they did because some of their existing posts are being redirected to subcategories vs the individual posts themselves.

    Btw, I just wanted to say you do a really good job answering questions in the hangout.
  • Alistair Lattimore: I haven`t gone looking through the site to check if they`ve changed things other than the domain name but you may find they took the opportunity to restructure some of their site at the same time.

    In general terms so long as you`re doing things using patterns, ie

     * /about -> /about
     * /category/seo -> /c/seo

    You can do the redirects using very little configuration. However as soon as the URLs you`re redirecting from and into don`t conform to some sort of pattern, you have very little choice but to map each old URL into the corresponding new URL one by one.

    I`ve done this in the past a few times when Mantra Group have bought an entire hotel chain for sites with 5000+ pages. We`ve merged their old site within our larger site but their old URL format might have been using /?page=123 for instance and it meant I needed to configure literally thousands of redirects instead of a few simple lines of configuration.

    +Justin Y Thanks for that mate, I do try and help where I can; let me know if you think I can be clearer about different topics - sometimes I assume people `just know` things because I take it for granted but in reality that couldn`t be further from the reality.
  • Alistair Lattimore: Alistair Lattimore
    NP! I think you`re the clearest out of the bunch, your analogies are spot on and most likely help others understand things more easily. We all learn something new from each other.

    Dynamic URLS, I bet that wasn`t a fun project.
