Hostagor SEO

Has anyone moved their old site from another host to Hostgator and updated their SEO on their new site built with a new Wordpress site? Reading up if there are repercussions on your Google rankings. I am keeping my old Squarespace site up with the old URL until I finish my new site. (Squarespace does not allow me the variables I need for my products) On the new WP site, I will be shortening the domain name and I want to have my old site`s domain point to the new one I will be putting up in a month. Concerned about the ranking if I shut down the old site when I launch the new one even if I point it. I would like to save the $30 a month and have all sites on WP. I already own both domains and have transferred the site I am working on to Hostgator already. Should I switch the old Squarespace domain to Hostgator as well now or when I launch the new site in a couple of months? I don`t want to shoot myself in the foot messing up my good rankings for my keywords! Suggestions?
