Google can`t see my redirect!

Google can`t see my redirect! We`ve moved our website to a new domain.
Our server is using CPanel and I used the built in utility to redirect the old domain to the new.
The pages are redirecting for the user but when I try to perform an address change in Google Search Console I get an error Google can`t fetch the page on my old domain. Likewise it is not allowing the address change.
I don`t understand why Google wants to fetch the page from the old website since it is being discontinued. I have removed the website from the old domain and it now just contains the htaccess file and the Google identification files to prove ownership. Should I have left the old website intact? Is there something else I am missing?
Old website jimmymarvel.co.nz new website kidsmagician.co.nzWe normally wouldn`t want to change our domain but the new domain is so much more SEO friendly we decided it would be worth any temporary setbacks

  • Michael Martinez: What rules did you specify for the redirect in cPanel?
  • James Fuller: With or without www, and wildcard.
  • Michael Martinez: If the redirect is being served over HTTP/2 then Googlebot won`t see it.

  • James Fuller: Michael Martinez how do I fix that?
  • Michael Martinez: James Fuller If your server is not using HTTP/1.1 as a fallback you should be able to activate it. You`ll need to if the other site is on the same server.

If it`s already enabled as a fallback then I don`t know why it`s not kicking in. NOTE: It could be that the problem is something else.
  • James Fuller: It`s working now. Haven`t done anything since last night when I modified the redirects. But when I executed the change of address in search console it saw my redirect and accepted my change of address.
