Chase Reiner: I need your opinions - Does updating a google plus page or increasing follower / engagement count effect local rankings?
Warrington Carpet Cleaners: HI I update my Google plus page about once a week.. This is content and pictures So around 45 updates so far. With regards to helping your seo in my case it has helped my local maps only. being position 1 and 2 for my keywords. I dont think it helps the seo for your actual website.
Reviews certainly do, this is part of the local algo.
If a business page does not have an attached website then Google certainly use post content to understand the business and feature it into different local packs.
Jim Munro: I couldn't agree more with both Tim and Russ' answers, Chase, and I realise your question is specifically about local search but I think it's worth adding that there also might be an unrelated benefit derived from updating and encouraging a following of like-minded people from any social source, not just including G+.
Anecdotally, I've noticed sites which draw a larger percentage of their traffic from direct and social seem to get more ranking respect than sites which rely only on PPC and organic.
I don't think total followers is worth considering, but the loyalty of some of them who add to the traffic and revenue counts might be valuable.
