Dumb SEO Questions

Which one to use: Wordpress Theme generated excerpt or All in One SEO plugin excerpt?

Hi DSQ,
I use a wordpress theme that allows for an "excerpt"  to display on my homepage.  I`ve noticed this excerpt, takes the place of my description, if I don`t write one in my SEO plugin(all in one SEO)

Do you think this will cause a conflict if I use both?
Should I refrain from using this excerpt?

Any advice is much appreciated, thanks

  • Nathaniell Brenes: I have noticed this too. I hadn't thought it would cause some kind of conflict, but i guess it might. My thinking is that it won't. If you look in the page source you only see one meta description, what else would Google see?
  • Ranu Jain: Hi Chris,

    Using both Excerpt and Meta Description wont be a problem. I read many blogs and forums, some says both should be different and a few says won't be any problem even if they are same. I also think that both should be different to avoid duplicate content issue. ;

    If you just go with Excerpt and not with the Meta description then also it should be ok as Meta Description is not important to search engine rankings but it is extremely important in gaining user click-through from search engine result pages (SERPs).
  • Chris M Cloutier: +Nathaniell Brenes ;that's a good point about what Google would see.  ;I didnt think about it like that.  ;I even looked in the source and it never hit me "this is what google sees"

    +Ranu Jain ;thanks for the insight.  ;I definitely agree with you about them being different. Thanks for the help
  • Michael Baggelin: Be careful on the META description because its the most important content to attract the client already in the search engine position.

    Other then that its not harmful to use both I'm pretty sure ;)
  • Chris M Cloutier: Thanks +Michael Baggelin ;I do try to craft my descriptions carefully.
