When to post your companies press releases?

Hi everyone. I`d like to know your opinion on whether to post your companies press releases on the company website after it has been distributed by a PR distribution service and it has been picked up by media outlets like yahoo finance and Marketwatch. Thank you.

  • Andrew Polin: Does it help or does it hurt?
  • Michael Martinez: I think it`s a good practice.
  • Stockbridge Truslow: In theory (though it`s not always the practice anymore) press releases are there to be outlines for a reporter to use for a story. They contain the details, some quotes to be used, etc - but they are really made to be rewritten by the news outlet.

That`s not always the case though. Quite often your press release just goes up as is.

As such, we recommend (and do, if the client budgets for it) take the press release and put our own spin on the article - expanding on it, telling it from our perspective, and changing it up a bit. This makes our content (and some of the things we`re saying) unique and puts our own voice into our own blog.
  • Andrew Polin: Good points. We use the press releases for product announcements, getting the name, and reaching media contacts. There really isn`t a budget to rewrite every press release since we do anywhere from 20-40 a month. I just want to give my clients as much benefit as possible from each press release. Currently, most do not post the press releases on their website. Nor do they promote them. If it is beneficial, especially for SEO, I would ask them to do it.
  • Stockbridge Truslow: It`s absolutely beneficial for SEO to announce what`s "new" on your web site. There are many ways to do that. A blog simply has that method built in - the blog index page sorts things from new to old.

A "New Products" ticker on the home page can serve the same effect, though. There are lots of ways to accomplish it.
  • Ryan Jones: yes, but not for SEO reasons, more for legal and historical and archive and reporter reasons.
  • Andrew Polin: Yes, it is good?
  • Ryan Jones: Also, the trick there is getting the press releases themselves to include links to the pages you want, rather than the press section of the company website.
  • Andrew Polin: I put in links to the pages I want for the PR Distribution Service. For the company website, I would add the PR Distribution link and keep the links to the internal pages on our company website.
