What`s the easiest way to track the popularity (number of clicks) of specific links on my own website?

What`s the easiest way to track the popularity (number of clicks) of specific links on my own website? For example, I want to gauge the value of graphical links on my home page (are they being used by visitors?) that link to other internal pages on the same site, to see whether or not I should keep them in place.

  • Scott Kindred: What's the easiest way to track the popularity (number of clicks) of specific links on my own website? • Caleb Keiter: Add Google Analytics event tracking on each link.
  • Tony McCreath: There is also enhanced link attribution that lets the in page analytics determine exactly which link caused the clicks:

  • Rob Wagner: You could try ;clicktale.com, they have a fee plan. ;
  • SEO Works Sydney: Have you tried +Moz ;'s open site explorer?  ;They now have a 'just discovered; section - it's pretty fantastic. ;
  • Scott Kindred: +Caleb Keiter ;Thanks. Adding the event tracking looks to require a manual addition of the code for each and every link I want to track on my website(s). Super time consuming and also requires that I predict future needs for tracking specific links. I'm hoping there is another avenue.
  • Scott Kindred: +Tony McCreath ;Will check that out. I hadn't yet seen your suggested solution in my research of the Google Analytics options.
  • Scott Kindred: +Rob Wagner ;and +SEO Works Sydney, do you know if either of your solutions addresses the specific question?
  • Rob Wagner: +Scott Kindred ; if you want to understand what parts of a page visitors are engaging, a heat map could be a solution. Some have free plans so you can give it a go with no investment. This of course is just my suggestion and is one way that I test landing pages. Here is a link to a demo  ;https://www.crazyegg.com/demo#overlay . This will give you an idea of what you could expect with a heatmap. I'm not suggesting that you get crazyegg, there are other services out there that do the same thing. Search on Google for heatmap and do some research. ;
  • Scott Kindred: +Rob Wagner ;Great help! I recall a few years ago GA had their own version of heat maps on their dashboard. Your suggestion reminded me of the ease of doing it that way. Many thanks.
  • Rob Wagner: There are other ways that you can accomplish this, as +Tony McCreath ;described above, using enhanced link attribution. I just prefer heatmaps. At least you have some options that you can explore. ;
