What is the best practice for redirecting http to https?

Guys I have a site that is going through 3 redirects and need to know what is the best practice for redirecting http to https? the developer seems to think that you need to include both versions of the website URL www. Vs. non-www. which is giving us 3 hops... http://wavedirect.net https://wavedirect.net http://www.wavedirect.net https://www.wavedirect.net last one being final destination, but I always let google search console handle www. to non-www. am I correct in my thnking?
