Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Steve Boni on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 01/22/2014).

What has off-site SEO become, and how does it differ from social media marketing?

Hello all:
My dumb SEO question of the day...

I understand on-site SEO, keywords, keyword concepts, meta tags, code/text ratios, alt tags and so on.

In light of the changes to the Google algorithm in the past 9 months or so, what does off-site SEO become, especially how it differs from social media marketing.   is it really only a matter of intent or is there something in off-site SEO that I am missing?

Thanks?

  • Patrick Coombe: Great question +Steve Bonin, SEO definitely is not what it used to be.

    Getting right to your question, off-site SEO can mean a number of different things to different people.

    For me, off-site SEO is about promoting my site in as many ways possible. This means reaching out to bloggers, trying to write for different columns, etc.

    Social media is becoming a larger part of SEO every day. Not in the fact that social media is such a huge "signal" (which is largely debated) but in the fact that it can provide so many link opportunities. Good content = lots of shares / links.

    The days of "building links" are definitely over, particularly for legit, white hat businesses that care about their future.
  • AMA DataSet: Great answer from +Patrick Coombe ;I agree with him entirely.

    Off-site SEO use to be majoritively link building but over the last few month it has become more and more risky to do so.
    For me it has now become more about reaching out to people, providing them with good content and promoting your content on relevant news site, blogs and the new favourite social media. ;
