Barry Gold: What do members of this community think about the SEO tools offered in Free Website Builders?
Brent Wildman: They're all pretty much junk. The problem with these drag and drop site builders is the awful code that is used to try and display the content. ;
Dave Elliott: In my experience you get very little control over anything SEO. it is quite rare you get to use canonical tags and quite often the code is very bloated and the page loading speed is almost always rubbish. You are also quite lucky if they use the correct h tags and things like that.
If you are say a musician or are using the site as portfolio then the free site builders can be useful as you are unlikely to actually want to rank for anything and it will all be social shares or direct traffic.
For any remotely serious business endeavour or anyone wanting to rank for keywords then these kind of services are almost always inadequate, especially as all your competition needs to do to have a major seo advantage is buy an off the shelf wordpress skin for $30 and spend a small amount on hosting.
one of those dis-economies, like buying cheap socks that fall apart after a couple of washes!
Equals Creative Ltd: More recently we have been taking on more clients using free website builders. I have never known any website builder to give you goo and useful SEO tools. There is never enough flexibility. It is likely that each individual site will have different SEO requirements. Website builders are too generic. The clients that we have taken on have often been taken down a route where content is duplicated and legacy SEO techniques have been used.
