Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Rob Baker on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 01/19/2014).

Schema is broken, and I don`t know what is wrong.

I`m not sure this is the right place to ask this question, but nobody is answering on other forums (and dumb questions probably sometimes means the wrong questions!)  It was suggested I make certain changes to the schema, which I did - see this page www(dot)southafrica(dot)to/transport/Airlines/mango-flights/mango-flights.php5

The problem is that the schema is now broken, and I don`t know what is wrong (see http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.southafrica.to%2Ftransport%2FAirlines%2Fmango-flights%2Fmango-flights.php5 )

It says "Error: No rich snippet will be generated for this data, because it appears to include multiple reviews of an item, but no aggregate review information." but the aggregate rating is there.?

  • Rob Baker: I'm not sure this is the right place to ask this question, but nobody is answering on other forums (and dumb questions probably sometimes means the wrong questions!)  ;It was suggested I make certain changes to the schema, which I did - see this page www(dot)southafrica(dot)to/transport/Airlines/mango-flights/mango-flights.php5

  • Jim Munro: Your question is welcome here, Rob but links to your site are not. Please disable the link like this: southafrica(dot)to

Most people here will know what you mean.
  • Rob Baker: Thanks +Jim Munro! Is the link to Google's structured data testing tool ok?
  • Jim Munro: Yes, mate. Thank you for your understanding.

+Tim Capper ;should be able to pinpoint your error providing he's not away on some mission. :)
  • Andrea Pernici: Hi Rob.

The issue your facing is well described here ;http://www.seoskeptic.com/count-vs-votes-error-for-schema-org-aggregaterating/

You can find real examples and the solution to your problem.

    Hope it helps.
  • W.E. Jonk: There are so many things but I think I found it. You use ;http://schema.org/Organization where as on other pages you use ;http://schema.org/LocalBusiness and those with LocalBusiness work. Reading through the documentation at schema.org both Organisation and LocalBusiness can have review and aggregate rating. However the rich snippet testing tool does not accept the aggregated rating for http://schema.org/Organization.

    Here the example I used: ;
    http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets?q=uploaded:8004f0411c9ed832f6c74c27159b0841
Besides changing the Organisation to LocalBusiness I also added ;<span itemprop="name">, otherwise you still get the error.

To see if the Organisation was triggering this I edit one of your pages which had LocalBusiness and changed it to Organisation. There you see that only the first review is served as a rich snippet:
    http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets?q=uploaded:8004f04109bd08719b3bdbf4f643e591

Since it is a testing tool I don't know if it is a bug or something else....
  • Rob Baker: +W.E. Jonk ;I reckon it's a bug that Google shows errors when you use Organisation and not LocalBusiness, but it places me in the difficult position of whether to use the more correct Organization (for that is what Mango is more than a Local Business), or to go with LocalBusiness so that no bugs are picked up!

An interesting thing I picked up, is that in the Webmaster Highlighter tools there isn't a category for Organization, only LocalBusiness!
  • W.E. Jonk: What does seem to work is to use WebPage and mark up Organisation separately, i.e. review and aggregated rating are marked up as an item for WebPage. For example here I mix WebPage and Organisation:
    http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets?q=uploaded:8004f0549b27e16bf8b9e175542146fb
  • Rob Baker: +W.E. Jonk ;Interesting. Although it seems wrong not to nest the Aggregate Rating within Organization, as that is what the ratings are about?
