Looking for some advice on whether to merge or redirect one of two domains

Looking for some advice on whether to `merge` or redirect one of two domains - with similar/same niche content - to become one domain. What value can be gained from backlinks... ahrefs ranks domain 1 url 37/40 - Domain 2 57/48

  • Hemant Bhoi: redirect
  • Webado C Webada: Backlinks are transferred through 301 redirection. That means both good and bad ones. If you 301 redirect urls from a domain which was penalized for unnatural backlinks, this will (eventually) transfer the penalty to the target of the 301 redirection. You`ll want to clean up your backlinks profile on both domains, sooner rather than later.
  • Jeremy L. Knauff: Yes, but not on a domain level. Redirect on a page by page basis. Otherwise you lose the effects of any ranking factors from individual pages.
  • Neil Cheesman: Disavow in place... (for some time)
  • Webado C Webada: Disavow does not replace serious attempts at actually getting unnatural backlinks you have built removed or nofollowed.
  • Neil Cheesman: on one domain which was penalised 2-3 years ago.. `serious attempt ` was made to remove and penalty was duly lifted... second domain backlink profile is natural..
  • Webado C Webada: OK then you`re good to go.
  • Neil Cheesman: second issue is a VERY competitive niche...
  • Webado C Webada: That`s the case with everybody. We cannot be totally honest with ourselves.
  • Webado C Webada: Well you may then have to face reality that maybe there`s much too much competition for that to be lucrative and pull out. Or keep it as a hobby site. God knows I have plenty of those babies myself LOL
  • Neil Cheesman: Just sometimes can`t see the wood for the trees when it is your own....
