  • Kasey Moore: With backlinks, as long as they're organic and not paid for you'll be fine. Mat Cutts talked about this and said the majority of anchor text in backlinks is 'here'. ;
  • Kenneth Villegas: Yes, it is not paid.. Our develop that specific website then included their Brand Name in the footer link with the link pointing to their site.. Just like other web designing companies are doing.
  • Kasey Moore: Oh yes I know the sort. What we personally do is set it up so the homepage has a backlink such as 'Designed by ...' then link that out without any sort of rel=nofollow but on every other page just leave it as text. After all the homepage will most likely have the highest page rank and you don't want to overlink to your site. ;

    If you're using PHP this code might help you. ;

    <?php $actual_link = "http://$_SERVER[HTTP_HOST]$_SERVER[REQUEST_URI]";
     ;if($actual_link === "HOMEPAGEURL"){
     ;echo '<a href="YOUR URL" target="_blank">Designed by COMPANY NAME</a>';}else{
     ;echo 'Designed by COMPANY NAME';
     ;}

  • Simon Fryer: Hi Kenneth, ;

    Backlinking with a brand name is probably the safest way to build links. A study early this year (which I'm unable to find at the moment) showed that most of the websites in the top 5 results have branded backlinks as the majority of their anchor text. It also avoids any potential over-optimisation issues. ;

    What I would suggest though, is that backlinks are only placed on the homepage footer of the site in question, rather than every page of the site. ;
  • Kenneth Villegas: +Simon Fryer  ;Yes, I know but my concern here is that all the 1k plus backlinks came from the site that i have mentioned..
  • Kenneth Villegas: +Kasey Moore ;How can we leave it as text on some other pages if it is placed in the footer area of the homepage?
  • Kasey Moore: What's the site built in?
  • Kenneth Villegas: Joomla
  • Kasey Moore: OK so in your template index.php file. Add the PHP code I told you to use above. Make sure to use the homepage URL. This will allow you to change. If you need any assistance. Give me a hola in a Google Hangout :)
  • Simon Fryer: +Kenneth Villegas ;
    I wouldn't worry about it. We have dozens of 5k+ page ecommerce sites which we built years ago still passing sitewide links to us. It won't do you any harm provided it's not keyword anchor text. However, it's best practice to only put them on the homepage moving forward.  ;
  • Kenneth Villegas: +Kasey Moore ;thanks for your help.. i'll do this later..
