I`m going to buy an aged domain with some great backlinks

Hi, I`m going to buy an aged domain with some great backlinks. I already run a website in this same niche. The aged domain is nearly identical to my own domain name (a hyphen being the difference). Should i:1) 301 redirect the aged domain to my current website to take advantage of the strong backlinks, increasing its authority (my current website also has some strong backlinks) 2) Create a new website on the aged domain, with similar content to my current website Any other suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

  • Abdallah Oubaki: I`m not an expert, but I have read somewhere that creating two websites with similar content is not allowed. I don`t mean duplicate content; I mean identical niches.
  • Michael Martinez: Abdallah Oubaki "...I have read somewhere that creating two websites with similar content is not allowed"I assure you - that is an SEO myth. People can create 20 sites about the same topic if they really wish to. But that`s an inefficient strategy.
  • Abdallah Oubaki: Michael Martinez, thanks for the correction. I believe it will not be a good strategy too. It is better to create authority for one website and focus on and enhance it every day rather than build multiple websites that will rank and go down finally.
  • Michael Martinez: Your first option entails some risk, not only that the redirects will be ignored (or that they might by some remote chance trigger some negative consequence with the search engines), but in that you might be destroying real value that already exists.Option 2 sounds better to me.
  • Richard Hearne: A couple of other thoughts - can you use WaybackMachine to get a better understanding of the prior site, then audit where their backlinks were pointing? If so you may be able to redirect URLs at a granular level to your own articles, where they might be less likely to be ignored?
  • Bill Hartzer: I would put a few pages on the site, same topic as your site, to test the domain first. See if it will get indexed, check GSC after a few days. Even though the domain looks great it could have a penalty or some other issue and you won’t want that passed onto your current site. Letting the other domain get indexed will also allow google to see that it’s about the same topic of your site. It may also revive some of the old backlinks so they count. Don’t be in a rush to 301 the other domain. Longer that you can wait the better. I’d give it 60 days to be safe, longer if you can wait longer. Then 301 redirect the domain to an internal page on your site. If you can identify old URLs on the site that have links then 301 them individually to certain pages. Never EVER 301 the domain to your site’s home page.
