If a client has a ton of images taken off Google to be used on their site what is the best way for us to fix this?

Quick Question about Stock Images.

If a client has a ton of images taken off Google to be used on their site what is the best way for us to fix this?

Could I take all o the images, put them in Photoshop, change them and all, then save as a different name and upload them back to the site? Is that fine or is that still basically the same image as before?

I try and always say take real pictures of everything so you don`t run into this issue but that is not an option with this client

Thoughts?

Thanks!?

  • Edwin Jonk: Because they are taken from Google images, the problem is that those pictures aren't yours and you might face DMCA take downs. ;
  • Greg Kristan: That is a good point +Edwin Jonk ;. I am in a bit of a cross roads as I want the pictures taken down but that is not an option from the client
  • Brent Wildman: Nothing wrong with having stock photos on a site from a technical standpoint, but like +Edwin Jonk ;said, there are some legal issues with just pulling images from Google. ;

    To protect yourself do a reverse image search and find a site where you can purchase the licenses for the photos and re-upload with optimized file names and alt text.
  • Greg Kristan: +Brent Wildman ;so even if I put the images in photoshop and changed the name the website is still under legal issues?

    So the best option (if we can' take the pictures) is to find a way to pay to use them?

    I just want to have all of the options ready for the client

    Thanks!
  • Edwin Jonk: There are some big stock images companies. But most cities around the world have a database that you can use if you pay the fee. How much you pay depends on the city or service.
  • Mat Jobe: IANAL, but I don't think modifying the images would get you off the hook. You might want to tell your client that they could face legal action (check out the horror stories from people who have used Getty Images). Google also allows people to file copyright complaints against a site, which could harm search placement.
  • Edwin Jonk: For "free images" you can look at images that belong in the public domain [1]. You can also use pictures that are under Creative Commons where you have to link back to the original source.

  • Greg Kristan: Lots of awesome feedback everyone!
