I have some thoughts on how 301 redirects affect SEO

Hi, Have some thoughts on how 301 redirects affect SEO. Say you have a website with, for example, the domain newcar.com. And you would also manage to get hold of the domains buycar.com and carsforsale.com. If you then make 301 redirects from the two newly purchased domains and point them both towards my site newcar.com, does it negatively affect the site`s SEO? Or it can be positive, or it is simply neutral and does not affect anything. Will Google give more traffic to my site newcar.com, when you Google on for example the keywords "buy car", "buycar" or "carsforsale"?

  • Perry Bernard: You will inherit the backlinks which may or may not be relevant.

  • Emma Karlsson: Ok But will it give any more trafic to my site when people google "buy car", if I own buycar.com?

  • Perry Bernard: Emma Karlsson no. That domain, it’s rank, content and keyword will be de-indexed from Google. You “might” gain some residual keyword relevance from it but that will likely be minor and short lasting.

  • Devendra Pandey: Usually people buy similar or very closely related niche expired domains and than use 301 redirect to get their seo benefit if the old domains already had useful backlinks.. the 301 redirect is useful in seo with these backlinks.

As per my personal experience into this topic, you have to do good research before selecting such domains for 301 redirects..

  • Perry Bernard: Devendra Pandey yes people do that. It’s considered to be against Google’s recommendations and best practices. As such, it may work at some risk. I personally do not recommend it.

  • Devendra Pandey: Perry Bernard I agree on this. There are situations when you have your own old domain and wish to redirect it to the new url. This is allowed by google and should be used ethically.
