Dumb SEO Questions

I am using the plugin 404 Redirected, but wondered if there is a better way to do this?

I have a question.  I inherited a Wordpress site that used to be a Joomla site.  There are a lot of (200 ish) broken links to pages and posts that were on the Joomla site and are not on the new site.  I am using the plugin 404 Redirected, but wondered if there is a better way to do this?  Thanks in advance! #brokenlinks   #404error  #wordpress?

  • Zsolt Bégányi: Do you use it for all links? On the other hand, if you dont want to the google index those pages, you can block them in google webmasters.
  • Mimetix: Hi +Yvonne Maddox. if some of those broken links are well ranked (type in google site:yoursite.com) and if you have similar content on new wordpress site, try using 301 redirects for some links so you don't loose traffic, instead of redirecting everything to the same 404 or the homepage.. You can also use GWT to disallow indexing some URL parameters, and robots.txt as last resort for the same purpose. I'd also recommend yo to send your new sitemap to google in GWT and go to "Fetch as Google" in crawl section so you can send your url again. don't forget to choose "URL and all linked pages" when you click on "Submit to index"
  • Yvonne Maddox: Thanks I will try this.  ;There is similar content but it doesn't have the same url.
  • Zsolt Bégányi: Be careful! Do not duplicate content, thats why look out with tagging! You can duplicate the content with tagging as well! :)
  • Yvonne Maddox: Ok.  ;I was trying to find an easy way to do this!  ;;)
  • Mimetix: also use canonical url's, and if they have similar content, use 301 redirects. ;
