Hello, I have a question about duplicate content

Hello, I have a question about duplicate content. I have been told to use cononical URLs when copy a blog post from my website to publish it on Medium or Linkedin in order to avoid duplicate content sanction.
Is it really a good practice & what is the official rule about this case.
