A website has the home page optimised for “Service Local Town A”; some sections of the home page content cover “general services offered”, other sections cover “service in local town A”.
Two of the inner pages include “Service Local Town B” and “Service Local Town C”.
As the web owner is now doing some national work, he would like to remove the “service in Local Town A” content from his home page and put this into a new inner page (Service Local Town A); this would free his home page to cover the services offered in more general terms and would read better.
Would this destroy his ranking in Google for “Service Local Town A” (once the new page has aged)? At the moment, his home page is already doing badly (bottom of page 1) for his home Town A but the two inner pages are doing well for the other local towns.
Should he keep some mention of Town A in the home page (eg in the title tag – or the h1 or the content)?
The web owner does not expect to rank on the national scene, but wants his home page to read better for all customers (not just Town A customers). He also doesn’t want to lose ranking completely for his home town.
