Does anyone know how Google would handle the multiple H1`s from an SEO POV?

Hey everyone,

Recently our teams been discussing HTML5 with the & tags and that HTML5 recommends to have multiple H1`s in order to break up the sections.

Does anyone know how Google would handle the multiple H1`s from an SEO POV? I`m a bit stuck currently & keep finding contradicting answers.

From an SEO POV I feel like having multiple H1`s would mess up potential keyword targeting on the site.

  • Luke Chaffey: Hey everyone,

  • Pau Lica: Having multiple H1's is not good for SEO, or at least not the best practice.

As Matt Cutts said, it's ok to have multiple H1's if you have certain sections, for example, the Blog page (/blog/) which has several post titles along with some excerpts under them.

Unnecessarily using multiple H1's can seem suspicious for algorithms, especially if you have keywords in them, and it will also ruin your page's structure, therefore quality.

H1 is a title, like a newspaper headline. You can't have two titles/headlines for a single story (except for section pages like blogs).

Here's a Matt Cutts video on the matter - More than one H1 on a page: good or bad?

You could break up the article just as easily with H2 and H3.

    Main Heading/Title = H1
    2 or 3 Main Sections  ;= H2
    Any sub-sections = H3

The HTML  ;5 recommendations are probably for readibility and helping visitors scan the article, not exactly for SEO.
  • Luke Chaffey: Thanks guys, these were my thoughts exactly.

Was suspecting even though they're in separate article or section areas that they'd still be treated the same as a current structured site.

All in all it dilutes the message.
