Do you think there would be any negative SEO side effects of having a like gate / social locker within a page?

Do you think there would be any negative SEO side effects of having a like gate / social locker within a page?    e.g. if there`s an advice article, then to get a bonus tip the user has to Facebook like/share, Tweet or Google+ the page for the bonus tip to appear.   Apart from obviously the bonus content not appearing for search bots to index, is there any evidence to show Google/Bing would frown upon this practice?    Mike?

  • Steve Kilbride: SEO aside (I'll let others more qualified than me to answer that), but I think you should create content for users, not for the bots.  ;(to paraphrase Google).

Personally, when I run across "click like or +1 me for more" trickery, I'll instantly abandon the site and look elsewhere.
  • Primary Image Ltd: Thanks +Steve Kilbride ;- useful points
  • Tim Capper: As above...ditto. you need to think how people would perceive you asking for a like. It would put me off personally.

Think about positioning your social widgets somewhere more prominent.
  • Rand Wilson: but I think you should create content for users, not for the bots.  ;(to paraphrase Google)
This guy could be on to something!
    (yes, I agree 100%)
  • Alistair Lattimore: You could try a slightly different approach, provide the content per normal and then ask for a tweet/like/.. so they can download a PDF resource or something
  • Chomp Digital: +Primary Image Ltd from past experience, like gates do more harm than good. Let the user decide if they want to like or share and avoid forcing the action. Provide a good user experience and let things happen naturally.
  • Primary Image Ltd: Appreciate all the advice everyone - thanks!  ;Mike  ;:)
  • Roy Engel: I agree with Tim, think what's best for the user first
  • Matt Staton: Isn't this pretty much the same as asking a user to fill out a form before providing a white paper?
  • Jim Munro: Hello Mike. :)
