Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Unique Websites on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 09/22/2013).

Can site-wide links could trigger a penalty for either source or recipient?

I have just done a website for a charity which has scrolling logos of 18-20 Corporate Patrons in the footer of every page.

If I add links to each of these patrons on every page will there be a danger that, now or in the future, these site-wide links could trigger a penalty for either the charity or the patrons?

Note that there is a Corporate Patrons page with links to the companies.

I have watched a Matt Cutts video on the subject, but found this a bit vague as the example given was an obvious spammy example.

  • Ranu Jain: There won't be any problem if you make these links Nofollow.
  • Justin Y: To me it actually sounds more natural. You can add nofollow if you're worried.
    That's my opinion.
  • Unique Websites: Many thanks +Ranu Jain ;and +Justin Y ;for the nofollow suggestion. Would you say this is ;NECESSARY to safeguard both the charity and their patrons in this case? To me, given the charity / patron relationship, it seems a bit deceitful to use a nofollow link when the average patron will see they've got a link and won't realise that the link is nofollowed and that they won't get any benefit from it.
