Can I have pages in french and meta descriptions in English?

Hi All, I have a question but cannot really find the answer.I have finished building a website (kind of directory) for the French Expats in Australia. The content of the pages is in French. However, I realised today that while it`s for french speaking people, on google people might search in English (because it`s in Australia)... like French Restaurant in Sydney or French GP and so on...So my question is what would be the best practice for the SEO? Can I have pages in french and meta descriptions in English? TIA

  • Michael Zittel: Interesting dilemma. I would make a sub/domain in English, at least the introduction pages in English. That sub.domain I would optimize in English and then drive people into French version. I`ll follow this question to see what other pros say.

  • Joce Buferne: Thank Michael Zittel

  • Buth Main: No, don`t do it.Many searchers in USA use German and Russian to find pages on these languages. Also, many people in German use English to find sites.I recommend you to use gTLDs with subfolders: example.au (English) and example.au/fr (French). Add hreflangs. It seems a bit expensive because you need to create create content and maintenance two sites, but it will be good for SEOs and users.

  • Joce Buferne: Buth Main yeah I see lots of work...

  • Josh Levenson: In order for you to rank in English, you need English in the body of the page. I`d stick to one language per page.
