Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Arne de Vos on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 07/04/2014).

Why are sites copying my content outranking me?

This is a bit strange to me.  If i do a search on the words "Olliboo A few top quality baby towels are essential for any mum and this towel ticks all the boxes." my site ranks no.3 in the serps.  Number 2 is a UK site (we are in Australia) and no 1. is a local site.  Clicking on the number one links only returns "Error 10004: Page not found".

Now considering that there words are mine (and have been copied by the other sites), one of the sites is the other side of the world, and the No.1 ranking returns an error, why are the outranking me?

Google make such a big deal about constantly changing algorithms to increase user experience, but that does not seem to be the case here.?

  • Pau Lica: Google is far from being great. It still shocks me with every search I make.

That page with the "Error 10004: Page not found" should be brought down with the next crawl. Maybe it didn't crawl it yet.

The other one has more backlinks than you. Their Authority is not the greatest, and I haven't checked their quality, but it can still make a difference. Also, I think their title is more optimized. You have this: "One of the Gang", which pushes the keyword (hooded towel) back.

I also think that your not focusing on the right keyword. That's a hooded baby towel, so why don't put that in your title? "Hooded towel" is too broad, narrow things down. Or you can go for "hooded towels for babies", even more narrow. There are more keywords, you should check them out.

I'm not saying to give up on "bamboo" or "olliboo", just that it will be much better if you added one of those keywords.
At first glance, I haven't seen searches for "olliboo hooded towels", or something like that. Only saw 90/mo searches for "olliboo".

I would also remove "Olliboo Organic Babywear - One of the Gang Hooded Towel" under the Product Description. It's already in your title and H1.

These are a few on-page optimization tips you could try.
