Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Dave Elliott on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 07/05/2014).

Should we help other webmasters?

So i have done a link audit on a site and have found that one of the sites that link to my client have a major canonicalisation problem on their site.

Basically there are lots of domains/pages pointing to my clients site. Most of the urls have a really poor domain/page authority but a couple of them aren`t too bad and are actually useful to the site. All of them are an identical page.

How should I proceed? Email the website and ask them to canonicalise the page and explain the benefits of doing so and how it will benefit everyone?(even giving them the code that needs to be added to the page) Or can I disavow the individual domains while still keeping the domains that have a decent authority, or will disavowing one link cause all of them to be disavowed??

  • Pau Lica: Before disavowing, you still need to contact the webmaster and ask him to remove the links (Google's recommendation), so you'll end up emailing him anyway.
    I suggest emailing him and telling him about his duplicate pages. Even help him if you can, like you said, you'll both benefit. It will also be much easier and would take a lot less time than disavowing, which can take months. The faster you do this, the better, because Penguin might think it's some sort of link scheme (Penguin is not so bright).
    Disavowing one link won't disavow them all, Google treats them differently, that's why they suggest to use the canonical URLs.
    Be careful not to disavow the domain itself (e.g. domain:domainname.com), that will disavow all the links.
  • Jim Munro: You could try but I'm guessing they won't thank you for it, Dave.

  • Dave Elliott: had other things to do, i have yet to get back round to this.

    The cuetimes listed on this page are functional while the live broadcast continues and also once Youtube has finished processing the public broadcast. Processing time varies between 6-24 hours. During this period the clip is viewable in full but the cuetimes cannot be relied on.

  • Dave Elliott: No no, this is a genuinely same page from the same site. Ie, my site gets a link from samesite.com same.co.uk www.samesite.co.uk, mobile.samesite.co.uk, email.samesite.co.uk, samesite.co.uk/portals1/ www.samesite.co.uk/portals1 etc etc. Rather than a page copied over lots of different sites. All the same page, all the same webmaster. +Micah Fisher-Kirshner ; had it right. ;

    Not under MY control, but will be under the control of one webmaster.

    Ahh you got there in the end :D. Cool I shall get in contact with them, and be very very careful with my wording and try and be polite, if they get annoyed i shall have to play with the disavow tool!
  • Micah Fisher-Kirshner: We'll try to be more succinct :)
