Hello. I`ve been wanting to ask something that I`m pretty confused about regarding SEO.

I`ve currently got a top 3 rank on a keyword that has been included in the index page of my website.

If I build backlinks, with the keyword as anchor and link it to my index page, do I need to have that specific keyword included in the text on the index page as well?

I`m asking this because I`ve also got a blog where I put up a lot of articles targeting specific keywords but when building backlinks, I`m not linking to the article itself, I`m linking to the index page of my website because that`s where I want visitors to get.

In short when building backlinks:

keyword in anchor, linking to my blog article with the same keyword VS keyword in anchor, linking to my index page without that keyword(keyword is still in blog article though)

Will they rank differently? Which method will rank higher??

  • rankyaseoservices: I think you are missing out when you are not linking to the article themselves, because it seems it is your blog posts that are getting the web traffic. You question is valid, but the question itself suggests that you havetn't fully optimized your index page (I am presuming that the index page you are talking about is in the root folder (because other folders on your site can also have index page).
In short, when building links, do NOT have your keyword in anchor just because someone said that is the way to backlink for #Google rankings (it isn't, in fact, doing so may actually decrease your Google rankings). Remember, you aren't ranking your index page (despite Google show your index page in its results set), also, you aren't also ranking your article pages either. Because Google rankings work on individual keyword level, so thus, your entire website is ranking for that 3 keyword/phrase, because you know this, you should stem words from them and rank them as well (because it is more than likely that they will get fair amount web site traffic).

Best advice, continue doing the rights things as far as targeting those long tailed keywords through your blog, because you know how easy it is to rank them, this way, you are bringing in highly targetted web site traffic to your landing pages, and if you want them to then go to your home page (or sign up page, or buy this/that page etc.) then tell them this on your landing pages, but whatever you do, make sure that they get the answers they were looking for on the landing pages first. You should re think about backlinking, and most often times, do it for your users best interest first, diversify anchor text, diversify linking to different pages as appropriate (as content permits) you don't need 100's of backlinks, and Google surely doesn't count backlinks as a vote. Hope this helps.

P.S as far as Google rankings actually work on keyword level? At 1:38 "a word" that we think should be indexed, #Google rankings work on per keyword basis http://youtu.be/_6mtiwQ3nvw
