`first to post` in relation to position in SERPS

How much `weight` does `first to post` about something carry in relation to position in SERPS. (I know - how long is a piece of string) Or, does it carry any weight at all?

  • Micah Fisher-Kirshner: It can play a large part in getting people to see, read, and link to the article. Google is looking at temporal trends at the start (for certain subjects), then the longer term factors like links. So getting there first can play a major role in the long-term win. TL;DR: Not a direct weight, but definitely impactful from a indirect standpoint.
  • Michael Stricker: QDF applies to specific matter. News. Sports. Prices. Events. Ephemeral things. But, ten seconds later, EAT and YMYL start to kick in, and that sudden appearance at the top can quickly fade into oblivion... unless bolstered by UGC or other evidence of engagement.
  • Devin Peterson: Do you mean if 2 or more sites publish similar articles?
  • Leighton Ward: Depends on the niche and the time frame in between the posts. News and current events for example, is one where you want to be the first as it allows for more buzz. In most cases however it makes little difference. If i went and copypasted one of your articles onto my site a week later but had a more renowned site and more buzz (links, social shares) than you I`d rank higher. That being said older articles in theory rank better due to more interactions, links, shares, etc. To answer your question though, time posted on xyz isn`t much of a factor, if at all.
